In her day job, jury chair Liliane Kjellman directs the Swedish Language Section of the Education Committee of the City of Turku. She says that while the jury had to pick between twelve fine proposals, the jury also agreed on the criteria to be used in advancing proposals.

“Most importantly, the proposal should be specifically aimed towards the target group mentioned in the SFV Start! task. In other words, towards young people who may have had a difficult start in life, and therefore do not reach their full potential to become what they really want along their learning path.”

Another important aspect for the jury was that the proposals should be scalable all the way from the experimental stage.

“The idea is that the winning proposal can be scaled up without large, continuous financial investments. It should not be an individual project that ends after some time.”

According to Kjellman, there was a pleasantly large diversity among the proposals.

“The teams have developed both digital solutions and solutions that focus more on emotional or individually empowering things.”

The third criterion in the jury’s selection process was whether the proposals were truly innovative.

“Some proposals were already almost completed, and they do not really need additional funding from the challenge competition to become reality. Others touched too close to already established solutions in the field.

Overall, Kjellman says that the jury work was very interesting, even though it was not easy.

“There is clearly great interest and great willingness to create great concrete solutions for children and youth. All the proposals we considered are worthy of visibility.

The next stage of the competition is a workshop in January, which prepares the teams for the final on 28 January 2022. The winning team will be announced on 17 February!
